A calyx is a group of petals fused together (usually green) situated at the base of the flower and holds all the petals together.

Making a calyx for sugar flowers gives the flower a neater and more realistic look.  Calyx cutters come in various sizes and from 4 to 6 petals.  For most small flowers I find the little 4 petal Daphne cutter works very well.
